劇情簡介：
懷顧的父親帶懷顧到海邊釣魚，卻因為懷顧捨不得丟棄所釣到的魚，導致父親未能及時脫困而溺斃，從此懷顧沉浸於不言不語的世界中。懷顧的母親徐梅茵於是帶著兒子到山上林區的醫務所任職，希望不言不語的懷顧，能因此而打開心房。
在山上，懷顧遇到小女孩佳佳與老火車司機宋大平，三人的友誼讓懷顧能夠慢慢感受到大家為他付出的愛心。不過山上的伐木業逐漸走到盡頭，在人口逐漸外移的情況下，林場也即將遭遇關閉的命運。
佳佳的父親尹中南身為林場工頭，卻也無能為力。在懷顧奶奶的再三逼迫下，徐梅茵終於同意帶懷顧下山，而中南也決定趁機跟佳佳一起下山，只有火車司機宋太平，決定堅守山林和自己的家園。
少婦徐梅茵帶著兒子到某森林區的醫務所報到任職，她們來了半天，工人們才知道這孩子叫懷顧，聰明多識但就是不講話，他到底是不是有病？沒人知道。
即將退休的老火車司機宋大平當他發現懷顧的到來，及對老火車頭的好奇和喜愛之後，他逐漸把自己的愛投注到懷顧身上去，透過火車頭、誠懇和愛，終於打開了懷顧的心扉。
懷顧的父親杜陵秋，是一個生物學教授，有一回父子在海邊釣魚由於漲潮，懷顧捨不得丟掉釣到的一些罕見的魚，而使父親負擔過重沈水溺斃。
這件慘事在懷顧幼小的心靈中一直存在著陰影，於是等喪事辦完之後，懷顧也變了，他變得冷漠不語。 當懷顧在母親、老司機及充滿生機的林區的暖流中慢慢康復時，奶奶却到林區來了，懷顧不禁想到往日被道士乩童惡整的恐怖，於是更加慌亂地避入林中。
最後終於在眾人的努力下，飢寒邊緣的懷顧一步一步走出迷林，走向母親以及眾人佇候的地方。

Huai-Gu’s father took him fishing. He didn’t want to throw away the fish he caught, and his father drowned because of this. Since then, he refused to speak. His mother Mei-Yin takes him to a lumber camp in the mountains, where she works at the medical station, in the hope that her son would open up and talk. There, Huai-Gu meets a girl, Jia-Jia, and an old train driver, SONG. The friendship among these three persons makes Huai-Gu start to appreciate what everyone is doing for him. But the forestry business is coming to an end, people have begun to move to the cities. This lumber camp has to close. The girl’s father, Zhong-Nan, is the foreman. He, too, cannot stop workers leaving. Huai-Gu’s grandmother pushes his mother to return to the city. Zhong-Nan decides to take Jia-Jia and leave with them. The only one remaining is the train driver, Song. He wants to stick to this mountain and his homeland.
