這首歌原出自德國很有名的詩人-布雷希特 「三便士歌劇」(Die Dreigroschenoper / Three Penny Opera)。Kurt Weill 譜寫成音樂劇，1928年在伯林首演，相當成功。故事的背景是英國維多利亞時代的倫敦蘇活(Soho)區，“Mack the knife“ 是音樂劇序曲的一部份，街上有人控訴著本劇主角「暗刀麥奇」的罪行。德文的曲名是 Die Moritat von Mackie Messer，英文翻譯是 Mack the Knife。Mack the Knife 這個角色來自十八世紀英國作曲家 John Gay 著名的的「乞丐歌劇」中的大惡棍 Macheath。
