劇情簡介：
小學剛畢業的冬冬和妹妹婷婷，因為媽媽生病要住院開刀，因此跟著小舅舅在暑假時一起回鄉下外婆家住。在這個短短的暑假，冬冬和村子裡的小朋友相處甚歡，台北來的冬冬在鄉下小朋友的心中總是比較現代、時髦的玩具讓許多小朋友心生羨慕。
小鎮裡充滿著許多形形色色的人與事，大家一直懼怕的瘋女寒子，原來是個心地善良的女孩，還救了婷婷一命。而一向嚴厲反對小舅舅婚事的外公，卻也在小舅舅奉子成婚後慢慢解開了心結。
導演侯孝賢藉著冬冬的眼睛，看到當時台灣傳統社會中的觀念與態度，「成長」是一個主題，「城鄉差距」當然也是另一個重要的主題。從台北來的冬冬能夠漸漸接受鄉下的可愛之處，除了呈現城鄉間的差異性，也拉近了彼此的距離。而經過這些事的冬冬，彷彿也成長了許多。

Dong Dong just finished grade school in Taipei. Because their mother is sick in bed, she cannot take care of them this summer. Their youngest uncle takes him and his younger sister Ting Ting to their grandpa’s house in the countryside for this summer. Dong Dong gets along with the kids in the village very well; they all envy his trendy toys. This small town has many kinds of things and people that are new to Dong Dong. A so-called “crazy bitch” who’s feared and avoided by the villagers, turns out to be a kind-hearted woman; she even saves Ting Ting’s life. Also, their maternal grandfather , who never approved his son’s marriage with anti LIN, is changing his attitude. Through Dong Dong’s eyes, HOU Hsiao-Hsien portrays the tranditional ideas and attitudes of Taiwan society at that time. Dong Dong, a child from Taipei, learns to appreciate the people and things in a rural area; as such this story also tells the overcoming of the distances among people of different groups. Dong Dong grows up quite a bit after this summer at Granpa’s.
