The driver who crashed into a Virginia Beach apartment building Wednesday may have been shot, officials said Friday. The death is now being investigated as a possible homicide.
Virginia Beach police identified the driver as Gregory James Smith Jr., 33, of Newport News. While treating Smith at the scene, Virginia Beach firefighters noticed an injury on Smith they believed to be a gunshot wound.
While firefighters were attempting to aid Smith, the SUV caught on fire, which then spread to the apartment building. The apartment residents were not home at the time of the crash and fire. Police said they were confirmed safe.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has not determined an exact cause of death.
