In New York, Taiwan leader says ties with US ‘closer than ever’

March 31 (Reuters) – Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen arrived in New York on Wednesday on what is officially called a transit on her way to Guatemala and Belize, and will be stopping in Los Angeles on her way back to Taipei next month.

Taiwan is billing President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to New York as simply a “transit,” but she kept a full agenda of events Wednesday and Thursday before flying to Central America.

China threatened to take “resolute countermeasures” if the leader of the small, democratically governed island of Taiwan meets U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy next week during her “transit visit” through the United States. It was the latest warning from Beijing amid escalating tension between the U.S. and China over Taiwan, which some analysts consider the most dangerous standoff between global superpowers, even as the war in Ukraine rages.

NEW YORK/TAIPEI, March 30 (Reuters) – Taiwan has remained calm in the face of China “deliberately” raising tensions, President Tsai Ing-wen told an event during a stopover in New York that so far, according to Taipei and Washington, has not triggered unusual military actions by China.
