日本自民黨新任總裁石破茂10月1日將獲國會指名為新首相，黨和內閣人事備受矚目。日本媒體29日披露，前首相菅義偉已同意擔任自民黨副總裁，前防衛大臣岩屋毅將出任外務大臣。至於防衛大臣人選，則可望由前防相中谷元回鍋。

甫當選日本執政黨自民黨總裁、準備接任首相的石破茂，應華府智庫「哈德遜研究所」之邀獨家分享其外交國防政策，再次重申必須考慮建立「亞洲版北約」（Asian NATO），並考慮引進核武，才能確保對中國、俄羅斯和北韓同盟的嚇阻力。石破茂也表明，他的使命是將日美同盟提升到英美同盟的水準。石破茂指出，烏克蘭戰爭已改變安全環境，這是聯合國集體安全制度的極限，「今天的烏克蘭就是明天的亞洲，只是俄羅斯換成中國，烏克蘭換成台灣」。然而，亞洲缺乏北約組織這樣的集體自衛體系，沒有共同防禦的義務，因此很可能爆發戰爭。在此情況下，建立「亞洲版北約」對於西方盟友嚇阻中國至關重要。
