However, director Pang Ho-cheung and cinematographer Charlie Lam collaborated to craft a version of the city never seen before: one rich in exotic flair and theatrical intensity. If this film were used as a tourism promotion, its emotional depth and visual allure would surely yield extraordinary results.

While tailored for Chapman To, the film’s occasionally sentimental plot would lack such conviction without the subtle interaction provided by Isabella Leong. To delivers what is arguably his definitive performance here, while Leong offers a continuous string of surprises, transitioning seamlessly from a rebellious youth to a figure of sincere emotional gravity.

片中有兩個鏡頭令我特別神往:一是杜汶澤從早期的強權支配動作,轉變為最後兩人頭頸緊緊依靠的溫柔,變化盡在不言中;二是結局前,杜汶澤為了幫女兒付房租而典當金錶,梁洛施載著他前往法院時,特寫鏡頭下她背部殘留著他新刮鬍子留下的血跡——那像是某種深刻的烙印,象徵著兩人在彼此生命中留下的痕跡。
Two shots particularly captivated me: first, a recurring gesture that shifts from an act of dominance by Shing to a tender moment where the two lean closely together, speaking volumes without words. Second, the finale where Yan rides her motorcycle to court with Shing; a close-up reveals bloodstains on her back from Shing’s fresh shaving cuts—a haunting imprint symbolizing the deep mark they have left on each other’s lives.

And who is “Isabella”? She is the name of the mother, the beloved lost puppy, and ultimately, the symbol of a long-lost connection finally rediscovered.

The film is permeated by an exotic score by Peter Kam, which earned the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and significantly elevates the cinematic experience. Accompanied by the mesmerizing vocals of Portuguese singer Mariza, my heart drifted toward that uniquely envisioned Macau lighthouse. Pang Ho-cheung is undoubtedly an artist to watch; this is a masterpiece not to be missed.
