Outdoor city rinks, parks to remain open during lockdown

The public is still advised to only leave home for essential purposes and continue to follow all public health guidelines

THUNDER BAY – The city is keeping most outdoor recreational amenities open during the province-wide lockdown and stay at home order, but is advising people to continue to practice all public health measures.

Outdoor rinks, dog parks, sliding hills, city parks, and recreational trails will remain open, the city said in a release issued Thursday afternoon.

Residents are reminded when using outdoor recreational amenities to continue to practice physical distancing and to wear a face covering if physical distancing is a challenge.

The skating rink at Prince Arthur’s Landing will also remain open but it has a capacity of 57 people, which will be enforced. Other outdoor rinks do not have a maximum capacity but physical distancing is still required.

Under the provincial lockdown orders, outdoor gatherings are limited to fewer than five people.

All registered recreational programs have been cancelled for the duration of the orders and updates on start dates will be provided once known.

“We continue to review the Provincial Orders in full, and are making adjustments on the specific impacts to municipal services, amenities and facilities where required,” said city manager Norm Gale.

People are reminded to stay at home and only go out for essential purposes such as purchasing groceries, medical appointments, or exercise.

Other city facilities remain closed during the lockdown, including the Canada Games Complex, Churchill Pool, Fort William Gardens, Neebing, Delaney, Port Arthur, Grandview, and Current River Arenas, 55 Plus Centre, community centres, Kinsmen Youth Centre, Baggage Arts Building, Water Garden Pavilion, and the Conservatory.

The city said enforcement of COVID-19 legislation is a joint initiative by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, city by-law officers, and the Thunder Bay Police Service.

Residents concerned about businesses and individuals not following Ontario’s COVID-19 related orders can phone (807) 625-5900 or toll-free 1 (888) 294-6630 to report any instances of non-compliance between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
