China’s AI-enabled weapons upend the global arms race and threaten U.S. power

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a focal point in the global arms race. Now that AI is being integrated into military applications, concerns have been raised about China’s growing AI-powered arsenal.

Advanced artificial intelligence will likely be exploited by “bad actors” to wreak havoc in the US and other countries, according to a stark warning from Microsoft’s top economist on Wednesday.

Almost 30,000 people have signed a petition calling for an “immediate pause” to the development of more powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The interesting thing is that these aren’t Luddites with an inherent dislike of technology. Names on the petition include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Tesla, Twitter, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and Turing Prize winner Yoshua Bengio.

Tech experts warned that premature regulation of artificial intelligence could give China a leg up, allowing the country to meet its goals of dominating the world in technology.

“The United States is in a relatively precarious position, and we have to make sure we move fastest on the technology,” Alexandr Wang, the founder and CEO of Scale AI said at the Milken Institute Global Conference Monday.

China has released plans to make the country the global leader in AI by 2030, as well as a National Innovation-Driven Development Strategy for use by the country’s military. REGULATE AI?
